Jiu Jitsu for the Win!

Second place in my first Jiu Jitsu Competition

It’s official, now my whole family is actively learning Jiu Jitsu. Zahira is helping teach Maxine’s class at Gracie Jiu Jitsu Scottsdale and my son, Mason, just started at Alliance Scottsdale since they let kids start a bit younger than other places. I go to both Gracie Jiu Jitsu Scottsdale and Alliance Scottsdale schools because their schedules and offerings pair up well for me. Zahira will soon start going to Alliance Scottsdale as well for their 9AM class which should level up her competition game! I’ll have to follow up after seeing how it all pans out. Ideally, all four of us stick with it for the next 10 years. The question is whether or not the kids will enjoy it for the duration and whether or not Zahira and I stay injury free. As it stands, we are all in as a family. I still need to get a picture of all of us in Gis.

I have been practicing Jiu Jitsu for a year now with Gracie Jiu Jitsu of Scottsdale Arizona. I started in February 2024 after watching Maxine roll for a few months. Maxine started in October of 2023. Zahira started in March of 2024. Sometime late 2024 Zahira got the bug and suggested that she wanted to compete so so she started taking the evening classes while joining me during the day classes at Gracie Scottsdale. She eventually convinced me to sign up for a competition that would happen on March 2nd so I found Alliance, a sport school that offered at 6am class and joined them in January. Unfortunately Zahira got a kidney stone so she had to pull her card from the competition a week before it happened.

I managed to secure second place 2nd in my bracket at Jiu Jitsu Worlds Phoenix IX

Zahira and I are both signed up to compete in the next Jiu Jitsu World Leage Phoenix competition. Here’s to hoping we both enter the next competition healthy. Win or lose, the experience is 100% worth attending. If you’re bored and want to watch my past rolls, feel free to visit my fighter profile!
